System choice whether to select a whole value in a field or to edit from the end

We recently made a change so that when you go into a table field that is filled in, the cursor is at the end so you can edit part of the value. Two customers so far have complained about this this and want it back the way it was. Could it be a parametre tht eisers or admin set?
